UNBS discovers expired goods

The Uganda National Bureau of Standards [UNBS] has discovered 280 cartons of expired cosmetics worth Ushs 30 million. The expired cosmetics were confiscated from stores at Sir Apollo Kagwa road.

The cosmetics were in cartons labelled Sivop Perfumes and Cosmetics and the tins inside were of Caro-light brand with different expiry dates. The Caro light cosmetics contained the prohibited ingredients such as hydroquinone, mercury compounds and lead compounds which are dangerous to use.

The house where the expired cosmetics were found being offloaded belonged to Nagasha Eve a local resident of Bunamwaya..

According to Barbra Kansime the UNBS spokesperson, the UNBS surveillance team received information that some people were transporting expired cosmetics from a ware house along Sir Apollo Kagwa road to an unidentified location .The team asked the informant to follow the vehicle to its destination and they got to the warehouse where the expired cosmetics were being offloaded.

When the UNBS team went to inform and involve the police, Nagasha the suspect disappeared from the scene.

Mr. Jameson Sewanyana the UNBS Surveillance team officer, warned the public to stay away from cheap products sold on the streets saying that most of them are dangerous.
